Guest Post: The New Way to Handle Aging

As I’m just getting back from an amazing wedding in The Hamptons (more on that on Friday), I’ve welcomed an incredibly well-written guest post from Sophia Smith today.  Sophia is Australian-based fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger. She could be described as beauty addict and life lover, with a passion for organic skincare and healthy food choices. She writes mostly on beauty and fashion related topics, mainly through blogs and articles. Sophia is regular contributor at High Style Life and Ripped.  When I read this post that she shared on how we handle aging in this day and age (pardon the pun), which is a topic we’ve discussed at length here on SST, I knew I had to share.

The New Way to Handle Aging

Guest Post by Sophia Smith

It’s a new day and there are new ways to handle everyday problems. If we take a moment to remember how baby boomers dealt with (or better say fought) the transitional ages of their late 20s and early 30s, we realize that they were the generation that brought cosmetic surgery into the spotlight. We, primarily millennials here at SST, on the other hand, are adopting the attitude “you are only as old as you feel” and don’t go through the process of aging in a defensive-aggressive mode.

This, however, doesn’t mean we do not give our best to minimize and postpone the symptoms of aging. On the contrary, despite all the media-bombarding with “quick repairs” (ala Kardashian-style), the new “aging” generation is using the power of nature to reach the ideal of graceful aging.

Fitness Means Youth

Millennials workout more than any other generation before them, and this becomes obvious as soon as you enter any gym or fitness club. The constant talk about healthy living combined with TV shows that glorify young athletes has created a love for fitness that is used not only as a tool to be fit, but also to remain young.

More than 80% of millennials workout regularly, which is a lot compared to baby boomers (61%). We are not only participating in regular gym sessions, but also taking additional classes offered by fitness centers and gyms (examples include yoga, pilates, zumba and dance). All this proves that our generation is a bit more conscious about health and fitness.

Youth Comes from the Inside

The shift between boomers and millennials is changing food as we know it, too. Just as we are conscious about fitness, younger consumers are also well aware of the importance of properly balanced diet, which is one of the ways to stay healthy and youthful. Organic is the “new black” and we can truly call organic food a fashion trend which is here to stay. Millennials are willing to pay more for quality and fresh natural ingredients, and that is what will make a huge difference in the future.

Organic food, especially vegetables, and everything from the “superfood domain” is slowing down the aging process naturally. Smoothies and cold-pressed juices are the new breakfast trends, which energize while not creating belly fat.

Skin Deep Anti-Aging Methods

So, what do you think, are we as susceptible to aggressive ads when it comes to beauty and skincare products? Well, no. Although it seems like there are more ads for anti-aging products than ever before, millennials are not buying into them as often as before.

According to a survey, 63% of women ages 18-34 are more likely to pay more money for all-natural products. Both women and men would rather choose reliable organic skin care products recommended by a professional, such as dermatologist, than flashy expensive synthetic product marketed by a high-profile celeb.

“Think Yourself Young”

In 19th century American women were expected to get married and have kids by the time they are 20 or 22 the most. Today, we consider “the perfect time” to get married somewhere between the age of 28 and 30 (see Jessica, who just shared her wedding day pictures at 29.) This is just an example of how the notion of being too old for something has changed through the years. Age is not a defining factor anymore, and if you think yourself young, you are young.

So, the miraculous way to control the aging process is not always Botox, it is de-stressing (through yoga, meditation, hobbies, etc.), expanding horizons (learning new things, traveling to entirely different places, volunteering…), keeping the brain young with reading and mind games, relaxing (spa treatments and massages) and, of course, laughing.

For millennials, age is just a number in our ID papers, but what we do and how we think is what actually says how young we are and how we feel. Hopefully, we are just the pioneers of natural aging.
