When I was recently catching up with my favorite blogs, I fell in love with a current reading challenge hosted by The Everygirl.  In this challenge, they’ve asked their readers to celebrate back to school season by staying focused on reading the classics for 30 days straight.

I’m loving this challenge!  The classics probably haven’t been touched by most of us in years, if not decades.  And most of this literature changed our everyday jargon and created sayings we see regularly without even noticing.  (Ex. “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning to sail my ship.” – Little Women)

But what I feel this challenge is actually meant to do is to 1) convince us to read and 2) convince us to read in a genre outside of our typical comfort zone.  And it is in that spirit that I will be joining this challenge for the rest of the month, with a hope to continue this habit afterwards.  It takes 21-30 days to create a habit, after all!

As I was an English Literature minor in college, I’ve read many of the classics much more recently than many of those in America.  So, instead, I’ll be reading a classic, hero, non-fiction book called “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand.  Yes, this was made into a film by the great Angelina Jolie, but I’m expecting that the book will be much different than the ~3 hour cinematic adaptation.
