Easy French Toast Sticks & an Ab/Cardio Circuit

These easy French Toast Sticks are an absolutely delicious addition to your weekend breakfast routine.  They remind me of breakfasts when I was a small kid and got the frozen version during Market Day.  But these are easily made at home, we know all of the ingredients, and they’re equally as delicious,  Trust me… I made them for my mom while she was in town.

Weekend Catch Up

To my American readers out there, I hope that you had a wonderful extended weekend!  To everyone else, I hope that you still had a little time to rest, relax, and re-set.

This past weekend, my mother came in town and we all headed up to our new home in Breckenridge.  If you’ve been reading a while, you know that we’ve been solely on an air mattress lately, so we (thankfully) convinced my mother, a past interior designer, to come in to help out with some of the decorating.

mom and me

She’s leaving town today (*tear*) and we all have a bit lighter wallets, but our place is looking a million times better than it did when she originally came in town last Wednesday!  (Thanks, Mom!)

Ab / Cardio Circuit

While today’s recipe is not even close to 100% healthy (although still healthier than the frozen version!), I decided that we should probably make an attempt to “even it out” with a quick workout.

This Ab/Cardio Circuit focuses on building muscle endurance, rather than muscle strength.  You don’t need any weights to complete the circuit, though you can feel free to add in a set of dumb bells if you’re feeling like you need a little extra push.

Ab Cardio Circuit

You’ll notice that I also set up this workout to be a little bit of a HIIT, with cardio bursts being interspersed with ab work.  I’ve made this workout to be relatively quick, so keep up the pace (with good form!), and feel free to add in additional rounds should time allow.

Easy French Toast Sticks (1)

Even the slightest hint of Fall weather makes me instantly nostalgic for the cooler weather of the Midwest.  I crave a simple morning routine, Saturday morning positive television, and time relaxing at home.

And when I think of those casual, Fall mornings, French Toast Sticks usually come to mind.  The light cinnamon flavoring, mixed with a light bit of vanilla make these the perfect holiday morning treat.  And they’re so easy to make, why bother getting the frozen kind in the first place!

Easy French Toast Sticks

Prep time: 10 minutes; Cook time: 20 minutes

Total time: 30 minutes

Yields: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of Texas Toast (sliced vertically into 4 strips each)
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • ~3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • Optional: All toppings (I selected powdered sugar and traditional syrup)

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the eggs, whipping cream, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla.  Whisk lightly until all is evenly combined.
  2. Dip each of your bread strips into your new mixture, turning to combine on all sides.  Allow the majority of the excess to drip off and place individually on a baking sheet.
  3. Heat a large sauté’ pan on medium until warm and add 1 tablespoon of butter, allow it to melt.  Place several of the coated sticks in a single layer in the pan, being sure not to overcrowd (I did three rounds of 7-9 sticks each.)  Cook until golden brown (~3 minutes) and flip using traditional tongs.  Rotate, including the 4 primary sides, until all sides are a golden brown.  I preferred mine a bit more cooked, whereas my mom preferred her’s less so to allow the center to remain a bit more softened, so it’s personal preference.
  4. Enjoy!  Once all rounds are completed and all sticks are completely cooked, enjoy immediately with you preferred toppings.  (To freeze, allow to cool completely and re-heat in the microwave for up to a week!)
