What it means to be humble

Over the years, I’ve heard so may different definitions of being humble.  A lot of people think of it as thinking little of yourself, or as unassertive/passive, I don’t think that’s the case at all.

In fact, I think I saw the perfect definition lately, which said, “…A big part of humility is knowing our own limits, our strengths and weaknesses, morally or otherwise.” (Mike Austin, Ph.D., professor of philosophy at Eastern Kentucky University)  It’s not about putting ourselves down.  It’s about recognizing that we don’t know all of the answers.

Since humility is a quality we can all incorporate more into our lives, and since it’s something that I’m focusing on in my life right now, I’m going to encourage us to bring in three lessons from experts on where we should focus.

  • Use your moral-compass in making decisions – Make it a habit to use your morals when making decisions.  What is the kind, honest, well-thought-out choice?  Be humble and accept that outcome with grace, knowing that you made a decision you can stand by across the years.
  • Be comfortable waiting for the good – Do not assume that everything that doesn’t go your way is automatically “bad.”  Accept opportunities as they are, and be grateful when the peaks come your way.  Everything is helping you to grow.
  • Focus on others – Focusing outwardly means that we don’t feel the pressure to be perfect.  Thus we can try new things and still be kind to others without a fear of failure.

All lessons that I know I’ll be trying to bring more into my life.  Let me know if you’ll do the same in the comments section below!Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Brownies

Lately, I’ve been obsessing over finding and creating healthy versions of sweet treats.  As the seasons get colder and more wintery (ok, so only in the mountains at this point), cozy-feeling foods have been on my regular rotation.  Thus, welcome to the family delicious-ly, fudge-y brownies that are good to the last drop!  *Note: The base of this recipe is from a few other recipes I’ve seen online, as well.*

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Brownies

Prep time: 10 minutes; Bake time: 25 minutes

Total time: 35 minutes

Yields: 20 brownies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond flour (or your preferred flour)
  • 2 large bananas
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (or your preferred replacement)
  • 2 tablespoons nonfat milk
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate chips
  • Sprinkle of salt

Directions

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 315 degrees Fahrenheit.  Spray the base of a 9×9 pan with non-stick baking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate, large bowl, combine the melted coconut oil, mashed banana, and vanilla extract.  Once combined, slowly stir in the sugar and milk until it’s mixed throughout.  Continue to mix until the majority of lumps are gone.
  4. Slowly pour in the flour mixture to the mashed banana mixture until entirely combined.  Fold in two tablespoons of the chocolate chips.
  5. Spread the batter into the pan and distribute the remaining chocolate chips on top.  Bake 20-25 minutes (high altitude), or until the edges are a slightly golden brown,  Allow to cool to room temperature and enjoy!  The longer they sit, the tastier they get.  Store in an air tight container up to four days.
