Halloween Celebrations!

Happy Halloween!  I hope that you all had a fun weekend celebrating, and I hope that you and your family have a safe and fun time celebrating today, too!

I’ve never been a huge Halloween celebrator.  I all honesty, while I adore theme parties in general, I’m always the one who will dress in theme, but only with items I already have in my home.

Halloween 2007, where I was supposed to be an 80s girl in my borrowed costume. My housemate Steph was a lot more prepared as an adorable duck.

Last year was a big year for me, in that I actually made a DIY tulle skirt to be a ballerina.  Which I actually also later wore for some of our engagement pictures.  But, typically, I’m hastily creating a costume with the things we have in our home.

I know that it’s 100% boring, but I think my mind is too practical to buy things that we’ll use one day ever.  BUT, between borrowing costumes, and constantly trading between being a baseball player and football player, I make it work.

Halloween 2006 with fellow Shakerettes in a borrowed, little kid Minnie Mouse costume.  Interesting fact: This was actually taken during a power outage on Miami’s campus, so our fiestas all had to happen by candle and flashlights. #safetyfirst

More of my celebration comes in the form of food and drinks – and I really do love theme parties!  In the past couple of years, for Denver-based celebrations specifically, I’ve made two ingredient pumpkin spice cupcakes and screaming pretzel bites.  But this year, I wanted to go in a slightly different, fall-like direction and decided to incorporate apples.  Because who doesn’t love going apple picking?!  And thus, the recipe below was born…

Baked Cinnamon Apple Fries

Cinnamon Apple Fries

Total Time: 30 minutes

Serves: 2 adults

Ingredients

  • 2 apples (any kind)
  • 1 cup milk (any kind)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • About 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Cinnamon and brown sugar to taste

Directions

  1. Combine the milk and sugar in a medium-sized bowl.  Slice the apples and peel them, adding each slice to the milk/sugar mixture as you go.  On a shallow dish (I used a concave plate), evenly spread a thin layer of flour.  (Seen in the picture above.)
  2. Heat one tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet on medium-high.  Once the oil is warm, take each apple slice out of the milk mixture and coat it in the flour.  Place the slices in the skillet so that they are not touching.  (You’ll likely have to do two rounds of this step.)
  3. When the bottom side of the apple slice starts to get a golden brown – which happens relatively quickly – , flip the apple slices until all sides are golden.  Quickly remove to a tray covered in wax paper and sprinkle immediately with your preferred amount of brown sugar and cinnamon.  Enjoy!  (Store in an air tight container refrigerated up to three days.)
