Wedding Prep Suggestions

If you’ve been reading for a while, you know that I didn’t go over the top in sharing my wedding prep.  This is, after all, not a wedding blog.  (What I did share can be found here.)

But, truth be told, I still get a lot of questions about how to best prep for your wedding, or for if you’re just in a wedding in general. I am not a fashion blogger, nor person that overly invests in beauty products, so my suggestions are definitely for the woman that’s looking for a simple prep.  Something that’s quick, cheap, and easy, but impactful nonetheless.

If that sounds like your cup of tea, then I highlighted my recent prep for a wedding I was a Bridesmaid in this month on SnapChat (@SemiSweetTooth), but here’s a quick synopsis:

Alterations

No matter the dress, no matter if it’s the right size, when I’m in a wedding, I get every dress altered.  Rather than getting the dress altered at the store, I bring the shoes (even if it’s a short dress) and the dress to my usual tailor where I am familiar with her work and pricing.  I like to get the dress altered close to a month and a half prior so that I know my body won’t be changing too dramatically, but my tailor still won’t feel rushed.  Once I’m due to pick up the dress, I’ll try it on one more time with the tailor and we’ll usually have some small changes to make before I’ll pick up the final product about a week before the wedding.

It all sounds like a hassle, but I promise you that this has made a HUGE difference.

Padded Socks

If you’re like me, then you want to dance all night at the wedding.  And if that’s the case, then my secret has been to sneak in these Padded Half Socks whenever possible to keep my feet cozy and on the dance floor for an extended period of time.  Because, let’s be honest, we can all count on one hand the number of cozy heels we’ve been asked to wear in weddings.  So we may as well use a sneaky trick to make those heels as comfortable as possible!

White Teeth

Count me among the crew that loves to whiten my teeth with grocery store bought white strips!  While I usually whiten my teeth a bit every six months or so, I typically try to add in an extra round in the week leading up to a big event.

On Snap, I spoke on the fact that I usually only use about three days each time I whiten my teeth (of a 7 or 10-day pack.)  I think that the full pack makes my teeth almost a bit scary, overly Hollywood white.  Instead, the one pack will last me almost an entire year!

Spray Tan

Because I’m a relatively pale person that piles on every once of sun block possible, I love getting spray tans to brighten up my complexion a bit – especially if I’ll be wearing a dark dress.  My typical process is to get my spray tan in the morning on the Thursday prior to a Saturday wedding so that I can shower it off Friday morning before the rehearsal and it will still be looking pristine come wedding day.

Also, if I’m travelling for the wedding, many salons will offer what’s called an “express” spray tan.  These provide the same color, but most of the impact is done in the first three hours.  I’d still travel with the spray tan on (no one cares, promise), but you won’t have to worry as much about the color getting onto your clothes.

As a pale-ish person, I typically go for a medium shade for events, but just because I’ll be in pictures.  It will feel a bit dark to you, but I promise that it will look great in pictures!

Hair

When we’re ordering the dress, I’ll typically also ask the bride what she’s hoping for with our hair.  Whether she wants all up, half-up, or all down makes a difference, especially because I much prefer to have more volume available if my hair is going to be down.

If that’s the case, then I usually use temporary, reuseable extensions to add a bit more volume to my hair.  OMGNB has some great options for a wide variety of hair colors and styles that are sure to give you the impact you’re looking for on that day.

While the entire process sounds incredibly time consuming, I’ve found that I feel more relaxed and prepared on the day of the wedding when I know I look and feel pulled together.  And, at the end of the day, it’s definitely worth it to me so that I can be fully committed to paying attention to the bride on her special day.

And now to our recipe…

Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

Back in the day, I used to make cake batter cookies as my go-to hostess gift.  They’re incredibly easy to make and are always devoured in a short amount of time.  But I was floored when Julie over at Peanut Butter Fingers used the same recipe to make cupcakes.  I can’t believe hadn’t thought about trying this out before!

I brought these over to my friend Stephanie’s house where she and her husband Evan host Ray and I for pumpkin carving every year.  They were the perfect, festive addition to the crock pot tacos Steph and Evan had prepared.  Yummin!
