Neon Yellow

May 6_1

Top: Lush; $38

Tuesday was a gloomy day in Denver.  With the sun hiding behind the clouds an abnormal amount (300 days of sun?!), I felt the absolute need to bring a bit of sunshine into my wardrobe for the day.  I bought this neon yellow number from a brand called Lush while Ray and I were browsing some boutiques in Denver near a new church we were trying out.  I loved the store, but I loved this bright top even more!

While I adore neon, and continue to support this trend over a year after it was all over the catwalks, there are a few tips and tricks that I use to take my look from 80s-raver to stopping traffic in the right way.  Follow these four simple tricks to enjoy this on-point look year round.:

1) Keep all but your key, neon element neutral.  Neutrals have a way of helping the neon piece stand out, while also taming down your look for a typical day.

2) Use your usual favorite palette to make your overall look rock.  If you love the way you look in peach, bring out a bright orange hue.  If you love blues and navys, go for a neon blue.  Personally, I love a great mustard yellow, so I went towards neon yellow for this look.

3) As always, dress for the occasion.  As this week is fairly casual on the work front, I’m willing to let my wardrobe pack a little punch. Yes, you can bring neon into every occasion.  But if you’re going for more business professional or to an event where you’re not meant to call attention to yourself (ex. weddings), then I’d recommend using these colors in small doses, such as accessories.

4) Just the opposite of pairing neons with neutrals, I try to avoid black unless I’m trying to make a big statement.  While black matches almost anything, the bright color matched on top of such a dark background can easily become blinding.
