Getting Involved in the Blogger Community

How to Get Involved in the Blogger CommunityNatasha, Hannah, Desire’, Lucille, (me), Lauren, & Brittany when I originally met them at the Willow Boulder anniversary party last year.  Now we’re going to each other’s weddings!

When I first started Semi-Sweet Tooth 16 months ago, I had no idea about what the blogger community would mean to me.  To start off with, the huge scale and depth of the blog world was virtually unknown to me, and was definitely misunderstood.  I followed my core group of fitness and health bloggers, but now am inspired everyday by a massive group of fitness/health bloggers, photography bloggers, fashion bloggers, food bloggers, and lifestyle bloggers, among many others.  And this doesn’t even dip a toe into the Instagram game where I’ve made most of my friends that I not hang out with on a regular basis in Denver.

But every time I mention that I’m hanging out with my blogger friends I see comments such as, “I wish I had a group of blogger friends.  A group that just gets it.”  This blogging thing becomes a HUGE part of our lives if we have a goal to grow it and make it into something.  If we don’t have a supportive group surrounding us to encourage us to keep going and continue writing, it will start to just feel like a time suck.  And we shouldn’t spend time doing things we don’t enjoy.

If your goal with your blog is to simply host it as a hobby, then keep up the good work.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and, in fact, I think that it can be an incredibly positive place to spend your time.  But if you decide to keep writing and make this a consistent part of your life, then I highly encourage you to get a group of bloggers to surround you.

In case you are looking to form a group of blog friends, then below are the three steps that worked for me.   They may not work for everyone, but they will at least get you on the path.

On Instagram, check out who is using #(city)Bloggers

  • Whenever I check out #DenverBloggers, I can fairly quickly see consistencies of who is posting regularly and where the new people are coming around.
  • Be brave and send out a few Direct Messages on Instagram to those you see posting regularly.  Some girls may not reply, especially larger accounts with several followers, but somebody will reply!

If you’re on WordPress, do the same search, using their contact page to reach out

  • Check the amount of  comments on their usual comments to pace interaction on their blog.  We’re looking for someone that has similar interaction on their blog as you do.
  • Be willing to send two emails to bloggers, the second one being a quick reminder such as, “hey, I know we get a lot of emails, so I just wanted to re-send in case it got lost in the shuffle.”  If they don’t reply after two emails, I’d recommend moving on.

Follow nearby boutiques and attend any launch parties or trunk shows

  • Even if you have to attend solo, search for somebody who works there and ask for the “owner or someone in charge of PR.”  Let them know you’re a blogger and want to know about the store, but would love to meet any other bloggers that pop by.
  • Get card from anyone you meet and follow up quickly.  I still have to work on this,  but plan a few events where you all can take pictures of each other for the blog or can all get discounts if they post about it.
